A good week for Emily Gregory
Emily Gregory, a Democrat first-time candidate in US politics, won a special election in a Florida legislative district that includes Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, marking an upset in the president’s backyard. The result was a reversal from 2024, when a Republican won the district by 19 percentage points. Trump endorsed Gregory’s defeated opponent.
A bad week for Khusela Diko
Khusela Diko, a senior ANC MP who earns R1.7m a year as chair of the portfolio committee on communications & digital technologies, has not paid her TV licence. She used this as an excuse not to comment on reports that the SABC had cut the programme Face the Nation after pressure from the presidency. “They ask so much,” she said of the R265 annual licence fee. “I am still trying to catch up on the amounts I owe.”
