EDITORIAL: Teeger’s unplayable bouncer

CSA ducked and dived as it covered itself in embarrassment over the saga of the U-19 captain

David Teeger is a batsman. But the way officials of Cricket South Africa (CSA) handled him, you’d think he was Fred Trueman and they were cowering third-league tail-enders.

Reluctant to face the Jewish teenager’s expression of admiration for Israeli soldiers after the October 7 terrorist attack, they eventually pushed CSA chair Lawson Naidoo out to the crease.  And he performed like a No 11.

At best the claims of the tournament being in danger are spurious, at worst they represent submission to blackmail

Naidoo, in attempting to justify Teeger’s sacking as the South African under-19 captain, cited “security threats” to a junior world cup that begins in South Africa this week. He offered no evidence of a threat. He didn’t even offer a shot.

This is not surprising. CSA is an invertebrate species. At best the claims of the tournament being in danger are spurious, at worst they represent submission to blackmail.

Just whom Naidoo is covering for is not clear. CSA is a race-obsessed organisation with all kinds of quotas that smack of Verwoerdian ideology.  Is there also a faction that has an antisemitic agenda? Naidoo denies this, but suspicions remain.
