For pandemic-related reasons, the popular Design Joburg cannot take place at the Sandton Convention Centre this year.
Instead, the first Design Joburg Collective will take place from June 3 to 5, fashioned around a 1km radius in the Kramerville precinct.
It’s good timing too. As people begin to hunker down for winter and a third Covid wave, this pocket on the edge of Sandton — long considered the city’s hub of design and home décor — will be awash with inspiration for making our houses as cosy as possible.
For the weekend the area will be "reinventing itself as an urban showcase", modelling itself on fringe events like Déco Off in Paris and Fuorisalone in Milan.

There will be outdoor and indoor attractions — exhibitions, showroom displays, pop-ups and free talks. Essentially, the intention is for visitors to don their takkies, hit the streets and come across assorted treasures as they wander through the district.
For example, you’ll be able to pop into Tonic Design and swoon over its sexy new Cannes and Cigarette collections, or see what other local favourites St Leger & Viney and Lemon have up their respective stylish sleeves. Then check out Mpho Vackier of The Urbanative’s compelling new furniture range at the Cocoon Lifestyle studio, or head up the road to the SHF store for the collaboration it’s done with local designers Heather Boting, Zimkita Sidumo, Siyabesho Thutha and Raeesah Malek.
The art scene will be represented by Baba Tjeko, James Delaney, Kylie Wentzel, Catherine Timotei and Trevor Stuurman (who has just been nominated as one of Time magazine’s Next Generation Leaders).
And in case the walking becomes a little too much, you’ll be able to take a tuk-tuk shuttle service between spots. Grab some street culture, and mix it with sustenance from the food and drinks stands scattered around the neighbourhood.
